Crane and Turtle Garden. Nestled in the heart of the business district of Makati is a serene
Japanese garden called the Tsuruki En, named after the crane and turtle, two traditional
symbols of longevity, peace, happiness, love, and resilience.
Early in 2016, Mr. Washington SyCip traveled to Tokyo with Security Bank Corporation
Chairman Emeritus Frederick Dy who brought him to the garden of the Nezu Museum.
Impressed by the beauty and tranquility of the garden, Mr. SyCip thought of creating a similar
th
garden in the Washington SyCip Park that was named in his honor on his 85 birthday.
His idea was realized with project initiated with the assistance of the Security Bank Corporation
(SBC) and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG), in cooperation with the Makati
Commercial Estate Association.
In May 2016, a core team was formed to carry out the garden project including landscape
designers from Sankakuya, Inc., a Kyoto-based architectural firm. A simple groundbreaking
ceremony took place on October 15, 2016 and the garden was completed and inaugurated on
Feburary 14, 2017.
